It took just seven weeks to get a prescription for Viagra (sildenafil citrate), which the FDA warned consumers not to take after the drug was first approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
For several years, people were advised to use the pill only when they had a medical problem, like erectile dysfunction.
But last week, the FDA issued a warning about the drug’s use in pregnant women, urging women to use the pill before birth control pills are started.
The warning also directed the FDA to approve more advanced birth control pills, as well as a prescription for the drug for men, which are not yet available.
The warning came on the heels of the FDA’s warning about Viagra being linked to an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes in men who used it.
In December, FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb issued a warning to women not to take Viagra and other drugs containing the active ingredient sildenafil, but to use the pill when needed.
Viagra is also known as PDE-5 inhibitors, and is FDA-approved to treat low blood pressure.
The FDA issued the warning after a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that the drug can cause heart attacks and strokes in women who take the pill.
The FDA also announced it would allow the agency to approve generic versions of Viagra and its similar products.
In October, the FDA’s warning was added to Viagra’s labeling to inform doctors that it may be linked to an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.
